VOLUNTEER IN GHANA

Gifted storytellers have preserved her intriguing history for centuries. Through epic poems, griots tell tales of the contributions and illustrious kingdoms of the Asante (Ashanti) and other notable tribes. The struggle to overcome hundreds of years of colonialism and slavery’s inhumanity are commemorated in their spirited songs of praise.

Regardless of the circumstances, she has maintained a steadfast resolve to celebrate life.

Entrancing drums summon villagers into the streets and cheering crowds soon give way to regal chieftains. Brimming with pride, kente adorned nobility and elders take their rightful places and watch the festivities as drums speak in rhythmic tongues that inspire jubilation. From birth to death; to making a mockery of hunger, hardly a day goes by without a festival of some sort. Akwaaba (Welcome)! This is Ghana!

Ghanians possess a genteel disposition and their knack for diplomacy has earned Ghana the distinction of being the friendliest and most peaceful country in Africa. So, it almost goes without saying that harmony is the order of the day. By speaking in proverbs and analogies, Ghanians are able to simultaneously soften the blows of bad news and rejection while saving the faces of the bearer and the receiver. In the most awkward of situations, Ghanians know that silence is golden and thus will opt to say nothing in response if it means running the risk of causing an offense.

Of all relationships, family reigns supreme as it is the chief source of identity and social standing. As a result, proper decorum is expected at all times.

Ghana’s mystery and charm are seemingly limitless. Perfect weather, ranging from warm to hot exists year round. Sandy, unspoiled beaches ideal for surfing and swimming blanket its coastline.
